Last night I went to see My Sister's Keeper with one of my BFFs, M. (BFF stands for Best Friend Forever, but if you have a pre teen or teen daughter, you probably already know that!)
We'd been looking forward to our movie date for a while. With our kids now out of school, there's even less time to do things for ourselves, especially seeing girly movies that our husbands absolutely won't see.
If you didn't read Jodi Picoult's novel, My Sister's Keeper, I'll give you a short synopsis. A fifteen year old girl is dying of cancer. For the past eleven years, her younger sister, who was conceived solely for the purpose of donating bone marrow to her sick sister, has been forced to undergo procedure after procedure in order to keep her older sister alive. Now, the eleven year old decides to seek "medical emancipation" from her parents, because they want her to donate a kidney to her sister, and she doesn't want to.
Yep, a tear jerker for sure. Going into the movie, I knew it was going to be incredibly sad. I'd read the book. I knew the commercials were giving it a light (albeit inaccurate) touch. M. and I stole some napkins from the concession stand so we could get ready for our good cry.
The thing was, it was way sadder than even I expected it to be, and I left the theater not as refreshed from my good cry as I thought I would be. I also wondered why teen girls would want to see this. There were tons of teen girls in the audience!
In the end, I got to be with one of my BFFs, we saw our girly movie, and my husband didn't have to sit through it, so it was a successful evening. On to Julie and Julia, coming soon. . .a girl movie we will probably won't need any tissues for.
